Thirty‐one marine pseudomonads and alteromonads isolated from fish and water samples taken in the North Sea or the seas off north Norway, and five isolated from water samples taken off Hawaii were subjected to numerical phenetic analysis using 98 characters. Thirty of the 31 strains from northern waters were grouped into four clusters: two of these contained only high GC strains (60–62 mol%), the other two contained all the low GC strains (41.5–49 mol%) and one high GC strain (NCMB 127). No clustering was obtained with the three high GC strains (55.8–63 mol%) nor the two low GC strains (43.2 and 45.6 mol%) from Hawaiian waters.
