1 The numbers of rhizobia in unsterilized peat‐based legume inoculants were not significantly related to the numbers in the broths used in their preparation provided the broths contained a minimum of 5 x 10 8 ml‐ 1 . 2 This relationship was also true for 18 of 19 strains grown in sterilized peat. 3 It is considered that counting rhizobia in broth culture is unproductive except where the production of inoculants is in its development phase.
