1 Bennett's agar, containing (μg/ml): neomycin, 50; cycloheximide, 50; and nystatin, 50; gave higher counts of Chromobacterium from soil and water samples than did the selective medium of Ryall & Moss (1975). 2 Colonies on the modified Bennett's agar were usually large, deep purple and easily recognized. 3 The strains isolated were identified as Chromobacterium lividum .
