1 Some chemical and microbial parameters were examined in a 12 month study of leachate from a waste tip. 2 Anaerobic decomposition within the tip yielded large amounts of aliphatic acids in raw leachate, which exerted a bacteriostatic action on coliforms within the tip. 3 Heterotrophic aerobes subcultured from the four sampling areas included representative from 11 bacterial genera and one mould. 4 Many of the isolated bacteria grew slowly and produced colonies much smaller than normal. The pollutants in raw leachate probably suppressed the growth of these organisms.
