A new design of closure for Non‐Injectable Water bottles has been evaluated. The closure employs a flexible rubber skirt inside the bottle neck to seal the bottle under pressure during autoclaving. Tests employing Bacillus stearothermophilus spore papers and temperature measurements indicated that the annular recess above the cap skirt could be sterilized by a normal autoclave cycle. Pressure measurements showed that the closure maintained a hermetic seal during autoclaving. A comparison between this closure and the DHSS system employing an aluminium screw cap with a flat rubber liner indicated that the new design could prevent the ingress of spray cooling water and offered greater protection of the pouring surfaces of the bottle neck.
