S ummary . A rapid test for the identification of phenol‐degrading bacteria was devised using a medium containing phenol as the sole source of carbon and energy. Degradation of phenol in such a medium was assessed by growth and change in pH value. The results obtained are in agreement with those obtained by methods requiring chemical analysis of phenol in spent culture fluid.
