S ummary : Production, extraction, purification and properties of an antibiotic produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens , strain 175, are described. Extraction efficiency was c. 57% with 3–5 g of product/350 1 batch culture, the product having an activity of 7900 units/mg (0· 12 μg/ml) against Staphylococcus aureus Paler. The antibiotic had the properties, of a weak acid and was active against both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria; it was stable over a wide pH range, was bactericidal, inactivated by serum, had low toxicity and was haemolytic at relatively high concentrations.
