Summary. A technique for the comparative assay of colicin samples is described. Relative potencies are estimated by a modification of the well known survivor count method, in which the lethal potential of samples is measured indirectly by colorimetric determination of their effect on the capacity of a sensitive indicator culture to reduce 2,3,5‐triphenyltetrazolium chloride under specified conditions. The method has (i) simplicity of operation, (ii) a wide range of application, (iii) rapidity of execution, (iv) high sensitivity, (v) good precision.
