Summary. The determination of burst size in chaining or clustering bacteria involves experimental variables that must be considered in estimating burst size/cell and in contrasting the results of different experiments. Whereas the Poisson distribution is the model for single cell host systems, the statistical model presented here provides a method for evaluating the probability of obtaining a plate that reflects the lysis of more than one cell.
