Summary Computer programs were developed for the desk‐top computer, Olivetti P101, with the object of enabling qualitative and quantitative numerical classification programs to be carried out. The system was successfully applied to the heterotrophic specta obtained using 20 carbon sources on 7 strains of Chlorella vulgaris. As a result of this and subsequent extrapolations, the algae were divided into one group of 3 strains and 4 other groups each containing one strain. A classification system was developed involving a dichotomous key.
