SUMMARY The ability of 548 strains of Gram negative rods to reduce selenite was investigated in parallel with their ability to produce H 2 S and reduce nitrate. Reduction of selenite was shown to be a reasonably good test compared with other tests used in classifying these organisms. The ability to reduce selenite often paralleled the ability to produce H 2 S; it did not parallel the ability to reduce nitrate.
