SUMMARY Esterase patterns of 217 strains of thermophilic aerobic sporeforming bacteria were examined by starch gel electrophoresis. Classification of these strains by this method corresponded closely with the results obtained by biochemical tests. Protein patterns were also examined by acrylamide gel electrophoresis. In order to study the heat resistance and other properties of the esterases, an attempt was made to purify them using high voltage carrier‐free electrophoresis.
