SUMMARY The efficiency of an automatic dry heat instrument sterilizer was tested using as test inoculum a mixture of spores of Bacillus subtilis strain MD 2 and B. subtilis var. niger as air dried films on stainless steel and glass objects. The sterilizer was operated at 200° and was found to be capable of sterilizing 20 stainless steel strips weighing 4 g each in an overall cycle time of c. 20 min; 6 sputum cups of total weight c. 2 kg required c. 38 min. Glass jars of equivalent weight appeared to need a longer time than did steel mugs. The factors involved in dry heat sterilization are discussed.
