S ummary . Two methods by which lucerne seed may be inoculated several weeks before sowing have been developed. Calcium sulphate, as a coating on the seed and as a granule, provides a porous carrier for the inoculum of Rhizobium meliloti which is dried onto it from a suspension in milk and sucrose. Inoculated granules sown as a dry mixture with the seed made a more effective use of the inoculum in laboratory nodulation tests than the coated seed.
