S ummary . Cotton samples bleached to different degrees were subjected to 100 cycles of steam sterilization (137° for 3 min—total cycle time 15 min) with double pre‐vacuum and were tested for strength before and after treatment. There was no laundering between cycles. The strength of normally bleached cotton diminished 16% during the 100 cycles. This is only one‐tenth of the damage caused by slower methods of steam sterilization using lower temperatures and gravity displacement of air.
