The best diluent for four bacterial species was 0·1% (w/v) peptone solution. Tap water containing 0·1% (w/v) sodium thiosulphate was less satisfactory but tap water, tap water treated with charcoal, quarter‐strength Ringer's solution, 0·85% (w/v) sodium chloride solution and glass distilled water were all bactericidal to one or more of the test species.
