SUMMARY: Batches of heart digest media, both optimal and deficient for the growth of several test organisms, have been obtained by varying the method of preparation of the trypsin used in the digestion. Broths prepared with alcoholic extracts of pancreas had better growth promoting properties than those prepared with acid‐extracted trypsin or commercial trypsin. This may be due to substances produced by the action of the non‐proteolytic enzymes present in alcoholic extracts during the digestion of the heart.
