Summary For the purpose of detecting organisms causing mastitis in distant herds farmers were supplied with rectangular bottles, one surface of which contained a layer of aesculin blood agar. Milk was drawn by the farmer direct from the teat on to the agar, the excess milk drained off and the bottle posted to the laboratory. The method has proved more reliable than the posting of milk samples ana compares favourably with the plating of fresh samples.
