This paper demonstrates how King's theory of goal attainment can be applied to the care of the adult with diabetes mellitus. Salient components of King's theory are presented followed by application of the theory using the nursing process as a framework. An example of a nurse‐patient interaction is used to more clearly present the application. The advantages of King's theory in relation to the care of the diabetic adult are also discussed.
