When concepts and the ‘paper and pencil’ tests used to measure these concepts are developed in fields other than nursing and subsequently are used for nursing purposes, the perspective mismatch heralds a validity issue. This paper presents a case for clinical construct validity as one method of evaluating whether the substantive meaning of a test captures the nursing meaning.
