This paper describes the use of ‘free group discussion’ hnked to patient management questionnaires as a method of improving learning in roles by students of the professions who comprise the primary health care team, i.e. general practitioner, health visitor, social worker, district nurse. It demonstrates that the students who were involved in group discussion gave a higher level of response and were more specific in their actions than students who did not participate in discussion but who were otherwise subjected to the same experience. Although there were no significant differences which may indicate changes in behaviour, this paper also highlights the difficulty of measuring learning.
