A conceptual framework for clinical nursing practice is outlined and then used to identify the contribution of psychology to the scientific basis of nursing care. The psychological concepts of perception and motor skills, the processes involved in understanding, motivation, social interaction and interpersonal relationships, and learning, are discussed in terms of their structure and function. A distinction is drawn between knowledge that provides a basis for understanding psychological processes and skills developed to provide care. This is to focus on the wide contribution psychology can make once one looks beyond the notion that psychology is simply concerned with what a lay person calls ‘psychological’ problems.
