The water activities (a w ) of galactose and mannose solutions were determined using an electric hygrometer. The results followed the general behavior reported for most types of nonelectrolytes and very well fit the Norrish equation. The a w lowering effects of galactose were almost identical to those of mannose, glucose, and fructose.
