Carotenoid thin‐layer chromatography on silica layers using petroleum ether containing tert ‐butanol or tert ‐pentanol gave chromatograms with improved separation of oxygenated carotenoids compared with acetone‐petroleum ether systems. The effects on the retention of the individual compounds due to the presence of oxygenated substitutents were different for the tert ‐alcohol and acetone systems. The tert ‐alcohol systems thus provided separations not available with the acetone system.
