Summary Brazilian limes (Citrus aurantifolia cv. Persian) were treated with 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5% of a permeable sucrose ester coating material (Pro‐long), and stored under ‘temperate ambient’(15–20°C; 40–60% RH), ‘tropical ambient’(20–25°C; 90–95% RH) and ‘cold store’(8–10°C; 90–95% RH) conditions. Weight loss and degreening were assessed periodically. Results suggest Pro‐long usefully extends the shelf‐life of limes, especially at high RH, low temperature, or both, by controlling weight loss and degreening; Pro‐long was at least as effective as gibberellic acid in delaying degreening under degreening ‘temperate ambient’ conditions.
