A new method was developed to enumerate radiation‐resistant, nonsporeforming bacteria. Micrococcus spp. and two isolates of the Moraxella‐Acinetobacter group were used as representatives of radiation‐resistant bacteria. Soil samples were used to provide spores of a mixed flora. Samples were prepared in reconstituted nonfat dry milk solids, litmus milk and meat serum to evaluate the method in a food system. Three doses of 300 Krad each, separated with 1 hr incubations between each dose, were found to produce a maximum reduction in spores with a minimum reduction in radiation‐resistant bacteria.
