A method was developed using Image Analysis technology whereby rice kernels may be classified in less than a third of the time required by conventional methods. Image Analysis permits the use of much greater number of kernels, providing a more representative measure of dimension while giving a better estimation of the actual sample variation among kernels. The Image Analysis method was found to compare very favorably with the conventional method using a Gaertner microscope and found to be superior to that using a projecting microscope. The reproducibility of the Image Analysis method was found to be better than ± 10%.
