ABSTRACT A noncrystalline bacterial mutagen was isolated from corn infected with Fusarium moniliforme and given the trivial name fusarin C. High‐resolution mass spectral data and combustion analysis indicated a molecular formula of C 23 H 29 NO 7 for fusarin C, the major mutagenic metabolite. The ultraviolet, infrared, and proton and carbon magnetic resonance spectra were recorded for this compound. Feed containing 56% corn infected with F. moniliforme supported growth of day‐old cockerels and produced no apparent toxic effects.
