Summary A method has been developed, based on headspace gas chromatography, for the determination of freezant residues in prawns frozen by contact with liquid dichlorodifluoromethane (DCDFM). Detector response was linear up to 300 μ DCDFM injected. This level is two orders of magnitude higher than the maximum permitted limit in the U.K. for residual DCDFM. Recoveries of DCDFM from ‘spiked’ samples were in the range 77 to 105%. A storage trial was set up to measure the fall of residual DCDFM levels with time during storage under deep freeze conditions.
