SUMMARY The sounds produced when certain foodstuffs were chewed were tape recorded, and the amplitude of frequency‐filtered or total sound was measured from the recordings. On the same occasions, the subjects' opinions about toughness/tenderness or about loudness were noted. Some correlations between objective and subjective data obtained in this way are presented and discussed.
