Summary. A clinical study of 700 root‐filled teeth with periapical involvement is reported. The canal preparation on all teeth was performed exclusively with girofiles in the Giromatic handpiece. The teeth were followed up 6 months–2 years later, when radiographic evidence showed an absence of periapical lesions in 40 per cent and a reduction in the size of the lesion in a further 56 per cent. The results demonstrate that the Giromatic handpiece is effective in preparing root canals.
