Summary At the University of Nijmegen NaOCl solution is now used as an irrigant and a universal medicament in root canal therapy. The use of conventional intracanal medicaments between appointments has been abandoned. A 2.5–3.0 per cent NaOCl solution, pH 11–12 at 30–37°C is used in combination with scrupulous mechanical preparation, and is a successful basis for subsequent obturation.
