. Described is a method to help users for a proposed computer system validate the functional specification for that system. Users construct an objectoriented model of the proposed functionality from the specification. The process of building the model improves users' understanding of the system and helps them identify any deficiencies in the specification. The method is applied to a real specification and a number of serious anomalies are found which would probably have been missed by a traditional review or walk‐through. It is concluded that the method is probably helpful, robust and reproducible for ‘transformational’ computer systems of low or moderate complexity.
