This paper uses a conversation between a health professional and client to explore what such conversations may reveal about some of the assumptions that underpin ideas about health and health care provision. In particular, the analysis focuses on the way in which health care professionals and their clients are positioned, and position themselves, when communicating about health. The delicate, and sometimes not so delicate, negotiation that occurs in such positioning is highlighted.
