SYNOPSIS This report details an acute inflammation of the temporomandibular joint presenting as classicaltrigeminal neuralgia, responsive to anticonvulsant medication. Based upon this case report, we proposethat peripheral stimuli may trigger central trigeminal pain pathways. Peripheral mechanisms of trigeminalhyperexcitability should be excluded when the diagnosis of tic doloreaux is entertained.
