An ultrasonic rangefinder (sonic sward stick) was developed for rapidly measuring and recording the undisturbed surface height of swards. HFRO and ultrasonic sward stick measurements of undisturbed sward height over continuously grazed pasture were closely related. The measurements obtained with both instruments were related to the sward mass; the distribution of that mass between leaf, stem and dead material had little effect.
