During June to September 1966 grazing activities of four randomly selected individuals in a herd of 17 non‐lactating, free‐ranging cattle were observed on an Irish hill‐farm of approximately 15 hectares which provided a choice of four distinct vegetative associations. A marked preference for Holcus‐Poa‐Anthoxanthum‐Agrostis sward was noted. Grazing did not take place at night. During daylight it occupied three distinct periods, ceasing shortly after sunset and beginning at dawn.
