It is suggested that the growth of a grass sward may be affected by heterogeneity of plant height. An initial test of this possibility was made by cutting a stand of Dactylis glomerata in such a way as to produce adjacent areas of tall and short herbage. This pattern was obtained by using three different cutting treatments, two of which gave yields which were greater than predicted from controls. The results are discussed in relation to alternative methods of harvesting grass.
