This paper is presented to the geophysicist concerned with the taking of seismic records in the field. Part I summarises present knowledge of the fundamental seismic process. Part II details the manner in which this knowledge dictates the selection of some of the parameters available to the operator for controlling the quality of the records. The manner in which the recording problem is changed by the advent of magnetic recording and of automatic record computation is also discussed.
