Summary This paper describes how DIGICO or MOLSPIN apparatus can form the basis of a new magnetometer for measuring vertical components of remanence along complete sediment cores. the core oscillates as a horizontal pendulum while longitudinal external field gradients are detected using a shielded fluxgate array. A deconvolution procedure recovers the vertical magnetization profile from the signal. These data can then be combined with horizontal component information to obtain records of palaeomagnetic inclination without recourse to subsampling. the instrument has been evaluated using a synthetic core.
