In response to a number of requests, we propose to report regularly on major volcanic and seismic activity. Unfortunately, this cannot be a hot‐news service. Reports of geoevents are published monthly in the United States by the Scientific Event Alert Network (SEAN); bur each one is issued during the month following the report period, it takes about two months to reach Britain by mail, and the essence of it then has to be distilled by us to meet a Geology Today deadline that is generally two months prior to the cover date. What we can do, however, is to provide a continuous record. As the information for 1989 is not yet complete, a convenient starting date would appear to be January 1989. This first part therefore covers the first six months of 1989 (the ‘period’ referred to in the text below); the second part will cover the latter half of that year; and thereafter, reports will appear as appropriate, each covering a reporting period of at least three months. We are grateful 10 the SEAN for allowing us to use its reports as the basis of our summaries.
