SUMMARY. 1. Churchill estuary beluga whales displayed their highest densities in freshwater habitat, suggesting preferential use. 2. Whale densities in freshwater were as high as 350 animals km −2 and represented over one tenth of the estimated Hudson Bay population. 3. Future environmental assessments of hydroelectric development in northern Manitoba, Canada, must consider the effects on the beluga whales.
