SUMMARY Plate‐like particles can sediment in an oriented manner or completely randomly. The hydrodynamic conditions that lead to an oriented sedimentation are reviewed. The tendency for plate‐like clay particles to adopt oriented sedimentation in high centrifugal fields is demonstrated. Maximum centrifugal fields that still permit random sedimentation are suggested on the basis of experimental observation.
