SUMMARY The factors involved in the design and structure of a database for Scottish soils are described. Codes were extensively used for data entry, which though restrictive, minimized entry errors, reduced file space and make subsequent statistical analysis easier. The database contains records of soil profile descriptions, systematic chemical and physical analyses for all profiles sampled, as well as mineralogical and spectrochemical trace element analyses for a limited number of selected soils. Query and report writer facilities are described and were used for the production of reports, tables and maps.
