Summary Equations are developed to describe the diffusion of two solutes that react with each other in the soil. Examples of such systems are nutrient uptake by a root simultaneously releasing a solubilizing agent, and dissolution of a fertilizer having an acid‐base reaction with the soil. Illustrative analytical solutions of the equations are given for planar, cylindrical and spherical systems. The effect of increasing strength of a solubilizing agent on nutrient uptake by a root is examined.
