Summary Differential pulse polarography (d.p.p.) was used to investigate the equilibria between humic acids and aluminium in solution. A reduction potential for humic acids was observed at −1.5 V but only at pH < 3.4. No reduction potential was evident for the metal humate complex. Determination of the free aluminium in solution showed that very little free aluminium (<0.1 percent of total concentration) is in equilibrium in solution with the complex before precipitation.
