Summary Continuous records of soil temperature were collected at 1, 5, and 20 cm depth, throughout the growing season, under crops of barley in the east of Scotland. The values obtained were considerably lower than the temperatures normally employed in laboratory studies of temperate cereal roots. The resulting hazards in extrapolating from the laboratory to the field are briefly discussed.
