Summary A method for studying the soil‐water properties of soil profiles is described and its development for application in the field is suggested. The method consists of infiltrating water at a constant rate at the surface of the soil and determining the resulting steady‐state suction and moisture profiles down the soil profile. It has been applied for relating the pore‐water suction and hydraulic conductivity to the pore‐water content of a a‐m‐long soil monolith.
