Summary The soils in Cwmcadian, Merionethshire, have developed in uniform Silurian mudstones. This rock consists of fundamental primary particles of silt and clay size. These are released on weathering in the same ratio as they occur in the rock. Because of the simple mode of weathering, silt may be used as an internal standard against which to assess gains and losses of mobile soil constituents during pedogenesis.
