Summary A study of fungal populations in the mineral horizons of a podzol was conducted using a soil‐washing technique. The mycoflora of various microhabitats was studied and compared. Results indicated that the position of the substrates in the profile largely determined which species were able to colonize them. Investigation of seasonal fluctuations of the fungal populations revealed no significant qualitative or quantitative changes throughout the year, variations observed reflecting the heterogenous spatial distribution of fungi in the soil.
